Mediumship and psychism need not necessarily be developed by a spiritually ‘evolved” or self aware individual.
Yes, you read that right.
A connection to spirit or strong psychic ability is not dependent upon a person being particularly spiritually inclined. In fact, I have personally worked with psychics/mediums who have zero belief in a Higher Power and know of more besides who have behaved quite appallingly during public services whilst claiming to represent the Next World.
Why is this the case?
Shouldn’t a Gift of the Spirit (particularly Mediumship) only be available to be unfolded in a person who has at least a cursory belief or knowledge of the spiritual?
You know, it is one of the reasons why I am such a stickler for proper developmental training in Mediumship and psychism. There are many practicing mediums out there who are personally undeveloped or lack even in the most basic self awareness.
I don’t expect trainees to be active members of any organised religion or union (SNU or SAGB), in fact, spirituality has less to do with following orthodoxy which can often cause personal growth to be stunted and much more to do with the growth of one’s own soul.
We live in a universe that operates through impersonal laws, one of which is ‘Free Choice’ (NOT Free Will, as this is entirely different). As such, individuals unfolding their spiritual abilities are free to do so whether or not they develop in parallel with an increased sensitivity to the needs and necessities of Self and others.
I believe that this accounts for the quite diverse standard of Mediumship and psychism that is seen regularly on platforms and in private sittings up and down the country today.
That is NOT to say that someone who favors their spiritual unfoldment and growth over someone who doesn’t will necessarily be a nicer or better person, but my hope is that with an understanding of spiritual wisdom, a belief in something ‘greater’ (name it what you like…God, Source, Great Spirit etc) and a commensurate growth in self awareness, will lead to a much deeper and much more profound and well rounded experience for all concerned.
WHY WOULD SOMEONE WHO IS NOT VERY SPIRITUALLY MINDED BE INCLINED TO DEVELOP MEDIUMISTICALLY?
Obviously there may be many reasons for this.
The main point that I’d like to make is that the faculties of mediumship (and psychism) work through our extra-physical or soul senses, which everybody has access to. As a human being you are first and foremost a spirit being, one who has always existed. Creation did not happen at one point in time, creation is infinite, in that you and the universe have always been (please try to ignore scientific views that attempt to put an age on this!)
As such you are much more vast and creatively powerful than you have ever been taught. Whether Christian, Buddhist, Muslim or any other, YOU HAVE BEEN CREATED IN THE IMAGE OF GOD.
This means that the things many people consider to be ‘supernatural’ are entirely normal.
Therefore, each and every person has the ability to unfold their psychic abilities and even mediumship if they wish. Though this is not dependent upon whether they are compassionate, altruistic or focused on serving others.
And there is the problem.
We live in a culture of celebrity. Public figures, TV, film and music stars have become the new God’s and Goddesses of our world. Often times recognition, fame and celebrity appear to equal ‘success’ in the public psyche and this is where many people begin their developmental journey.
Individuals may believe that developing Mediumship or psychism is a way into the world of celebrity. Sometimes they are not even cognizant of their own reasons for developing. They simply do it, because they can.
Where ego is at the fore, soul has to take a back seat.
I am not a fan of teachings that say we must kill the ego. Rubbish. Without the ego most of us would cease to be able to operate in this physical world. Ego primarily helps us to be embodied. Where the problem lies is in believing the ego to be all that we are.
Mediumship is SERVICE. We are meant to give of ourselves in order to help others, thus serving the Divine in all of creation. Another very important fact about Mediumship (according to the people of the Next World themselves) is that Mediunship exists primarily to help spiritualise the people of this earth. To assist them in understanding that although their physical existence is transient, their life is eternal, thus leading to greater understanding and compassion for one another, less greed, hatred, conflict etc etc.
HOW THEN, DOES A SPIRITUALLY UNEVOLVED INDICIDUAL SEEK TO SPIRITUALISE OTHERS?
I feel that this is where the rubber meets the road on this particular issue. If we do not develop our own spirituality and self awareness in parallel to unfolding spiritual gifts, what we are left with is simply a shell of what might have been.
How can we possibly attend to those in need without having the wisdom to uplift and care?
This is not about intellectualism, having letters after your name or certificates on your wall, but the basic desire to better your own soul, to realise your own true Self, as spirit born of and sustained by the Divine and passing on that knowledge to others in order to help them and quell their fears.
No proselytizing is necessary. We are not seeking to convert people to any way of life or knowledge that they are not willing to come to of their own volition. We are simply here to provide evidence of the continuity of life beyond physical death, but in doing so, wouldnt it be so much more enriching if those serving were engaged in an inner journey of their own?
SURELY SOME IMPERFECT HELP IS BETTER THAN NO HELP AT ALL?
I can readily accept that. As long as the ‘help’ given isn’t harmful or disrespectful (to the individual or the Spirit People). I am aware of some very unsettling behaviour of certain individuals who claim to be working in service of spirit. Often times those who carry unhealed wounds of their own behave in ways that are unbecoming to themselves and others. Unfortunately, if we seek to help others from the unhealed places within ourselves we may end up causing a great deal more harm. It would be preferable to invest some time and patience in doing the necessary inner work before releasing oneself on an unsuspecting public.
My greatest wish is that all Mediums and Psychics who work privately and publicly should KNOW THEIR SUBJECT.
The difference between BELIEF and TRUTH is crucial in this.
BELIEF VS TRUTH
You may believe that animals don’t have souls. Yet, that is not the Truth. You may believe that bad people go to hell, yet that is not the Truth. You may believe that people still need to eat and drink in the Next World, yet that is not the Truth. You may believe that some spirits need ‘rescuing’, yet that is not the Truth.
You may BELIEVE WHAT YOU LIKE.
BUT IT DOES NOT MAKE IT THE TRUTH.
If you are working as an ambassador for the World of the Spirit you should at least understand what constitutes a personally held belief and that which is a Spiritual Truth.
Those serving the Divine need only speak in Truths.
One may only open up to the Truth through the stages of personal development, which is a very necessary process of giving up limiting, personal beliefs and beholding the impervious, undeniable spiritual Truth.
A journey of mediumship or psychic unfoldment must therefore be considered incomplete if self awareness and personal development- SOUL GROWTH is not given equal attention.
MAURICE BARBANELL’S EXCEPTIONAL SPIRIT GUIDE SILVER BIRCH SAID;
‘Where you get the development of the psychic without the spiritual, there you have a low plane of vibration. When you get a combination of both, then you have not only a great medium but a great man or woman.’
‘What you must all learn is that there are two forms of development. You can unfold that which is of the soul and you can unfold that which is of the spirit. One is the development of only the psychic faculty, and the other is soul growth.’
