Can Spirit Follow Us Home?

Here’s an interesting question that came up in last week’s Development Circle;

‘Can the spirit people follow us home from circle or a demonstration of mediumship?’

Lets break this down.
Sometimes those who begin their mediumistic development may have had very early encounters with those in the Next World that have unsettled them. I can understand this very well. As a child who both saw and heard spirit I reached an age where I linked this with horror movies and ghost stories and became utterly terrified of any contact. Let me state here and now that the spirit people themselves weren’t terrifying; they did not try to scare me or do anything that was frightening, it was MY OWN fears and prejudices (brought on by a culture which quite literally demonises such encounters and abilities) which scared me.

Many of us learned to push down our abilities in order to ‘protect’ ourselves from these feelings of terror. Sadly, we have latterly been governed by an orthodoxy that preaches about eternal life, but isn’t so happy with those able to give evidence of that fact. Although seers, mediums, prophets and prophetesses are all foundational to biblical teachings and other religions, many would have us believe that these faculties died out in the Old Testament era. Any such Gifts of the Spirit, such as Clairvoyance, demonstrated since that time are deemed to be ‘evil’.

I know that all things are born of God/Source/Great Spirit. As the Bible correctly states in John 1:3
‘All things were made through Him; and without Him not even one thing was made that has come into being.’

Created and uncreated, manifest and unmanifest, all comes from Source, all is God. Therefore, contact with the Next World is simply a God-made fact or birthright.  Nothing demonic or evil about it, nothing to see here folks.

Because of such baked-in fears some individuals are  frightened of their own very natural abilities. They fall prey to all kinds of misconception and nonsense, which is one of the reasons that I am so determined to teach mediumship development from a stance of common sense and knowledge rooted in spirituality and self awareness. We each carry many beliefs and ideals about ourselves, the ways in which we should act and live, about others and the world we live in. Most of these beliefs do not belong to us, we have inherited them from well meaning, though sometimes ill informed and occasionally abusive primary caregivers. Many of us have never even stopped to ask ourselves ‘is that really what I think/believe/want?’ We simply carry around the basket full of heavy rocks that has been handed down by those before, who knew no different.

So, what is the answer to the question posed above? Are the spirit people able to follow us home?

It’s a question steeped in physicality and fear, based in an entirely material perspective. In asking this question we are erroneously inferring that if we connect with a person in the Next World they will be attached to us forever, we will come under their influence, or even worse, be possessed and lose all of our autonomy! Woven inextricably into this question is the implicit sense that the spirit people are somehow ‘other’; that they are ghosts, apparitions, the type that haunt, terrify and wander without purpose for centuries.
The fact is, YOU AND I ARE SPIRIT PEOPLE.
We are all Spirit Beings enjoying a sojourn in the physical realm (and physical body). When our physical shell eventually falls away at ‘death’, we do not suddenly cease to be. We continue on, just as we always have, only with our original etheric body (an exact copy of the physical body, minus any disease or deformity. Our physical expression is created out of our karmic patterns, parental physicality and our etheric body – the matrix of light upon which the material creation is structured.)
What I’m trying to say is, THE SPIRIT PEOPLE ARE SIMPLY PEOPLE.

Of course, there are nice people and not so nice people, people who resonate with you and your ideals and those who don’t, but for the main part, you will only ever communicate mediumistically with your own guides and loved ones and the guides and loved ones of others. All very normal, reasonable people.
Those who are resident in the Next World have lives to lead. They are busy with acts of service, pursuits and talents that they were unable to develop on the earth, art, music, learning, travel, loving and laughing.

Why would they want to come home with you?

Seriously. WHY?
What’s so interesting about you that they can’t find in the Next World? (a world where thought creates almost instantly).

My development circles are extremely well organised, guided and guarded both on the earth side and the Spirit side of life. ‘Protection’ is something that is often over-egged in spiritual circles. I’m happier speaking about having healthy boundaries, as ‘protection’ makes people think that there’s evil lurking around every corner, ready to pounce and that’s just not the case. As you should have healthy boundaries in all of your earthly relationships, so you should apply this to any spiritual work and communication. To set healthy boundaries you decide what is and isn’t appropriate for you, draw a line in the sand and reinforce it to make sure that it’s not crossed. No amount of salt, sage or crystals are going to do this for you if you haven’t intentionally decided that your space is your space, your life is your life etc (we will cover this in more depth in a future post).

DO THEY NEED SOMETHING FROM YOU?
If you are sitting in a circle then they usually will have given their message to a friend or loved one whilst there. If they did not get through this time, then the guides who organise circle and communication on the Other Side of Life will help them to try again next time.

WHO DO YOU FEAR COMING HOME WITH YOU?
Is it just the thought of someone else’s Grandma knocking around your house or are you imagining Pennywise hiding in your closet?
I ask because the two are VERY different things. The first is a person, with all of their memories and love and life experience, who has relatives and loved ones of their own to watch over and attend to. The other is pure fiction straight from the pen of Stephen King.

WHY WOULD THEY WANT TO COME HOME WITH YOU? (AGAIN!)
They have a wonderful home in the Next World and I hate to tell you this, but the chances are, it’s much nicer than yours!

ARE THEY ATTRACTED TO YOUR LIGHT, YOUR AURA OR PERSONALITY?
Again, this calls for a reality check: are you seriously saying that there aren’t many, many more charismatic, attractive and illuminated beings on the Other Side of Life than you?!

BUT WHAT DO I DO IF I AM FOLLOWED HOME BY A SPIRIT PERSON?
If on the very, very, very off chance that you feel that someone in spirit has come home with you, YOU TELL THEM TO LEAVE. You don’t necessarily have to be rude about it, but they do have to do as they’ve been told. Your space, your rules.
(Though I would caveat that by asking you to make sure that you have checked for any potential plumbing/heating issues, creaky floorboards, pests etc. Nine times out of ten these things have a perfectly normal explanation. If you are ‘sensing’ Spirit around you, then it is far more likely to be a loved one of your own. Alot of ‘hauntings’ fall into this category.)

Something to remember is that if you are fearful of spirit contact for any reason, this may hamper or even prevent your mediumistic development. After all, your loved ones and guides will be extremely sensitive to your fears and because they care for your wellbeing as much as they do, they will not wish to do anything to make you even more afraid.

Above all, although we often call those living in the Next World the ‘spirit people’ they are, simply PEOPLE. They have lives to lead, pursuits to enjoy, friendships and relationships, just as you do, all lived in a world of beauty, love and light. A place without war, disease, old age and death. A place where no one works for a wage to house and feed themselves.

The ‘evil’ that so many fear is made of man’s misdeeds and is all around us on this earth plane. If I were in the Next World the last place I would want to be is the earth.
We should try to keep this in mind as we traverse our pathway of development and always remain grounded in common sense, a good knowledge of our subject and sensible teaching.
