Mental Mediumship is the form of mediumship most widely used at demonstrations and in private sittings today.
Mental Mediumship is simply mind-to-mind contact between a person living on the earth and a discarnate person (the so-called ‘dead’).
Telepathy is the natural mode of communication in the World of the Spirit, which is why when we arrive in this life we need to learn how to talk, using our new physical body!
Upon our passing back into the Next World we quickly remember that we ‘hear’ the voices of others in our minds and our own thoughts are just as easily known by others. That is why nothing is hidden in the World of the Spirit. (Better to start having loving, compassionate and charitable thoughts now and begin raising your intellectual and spiritual sights here on the earth, than wait until you have passed over and every little thing is known by everyone!)
For a medium practicing mental mediumship to recieve impressions and contact from the Spirit People, it is essential that they are able to quieten their mind. Consider most people’s minds to be turbulent and ever churning, like the surface of the Mid-Atlantic in winter. Stormy and full of movement, a single drop of rain falling onto that surface would be extremely difficult to register. Likewise, when the water is still, quiet and glassy a single droplet falling onto it will create ripples and be more easily noticed.
Communication from those resident in Spirit is usually extremely subtle. The mental impressions create very subtle ripples on the mind of the medium and in order to pick up on them we must learn to distinguish them from our own mental processes, thoughts and memories. To develop this quiet mind (and greater attunement) we sit for development.
Many developing mediums get stuck in a rut of thinking that the flotsam and jetsam of their own mind has greater meaning than it actually does. In the early stages as we are learning to quieten the mind through guided journey and meditation, the mind can take us on some rather wild rides. This is often when we encounter random archetypes, mixed in with characters from books we’ve read or films we have seen, or myths and legends that we are interested in. This is usually the subconscious clearing out the gunk, getting it all out of the system to make way for actual communication to take place. If you pay too much attention to these types of journies and credit them with greater importance other than that of simple ‘waste removal’, your developmental journey may falter and plateau. It takes spiritual discernment and self awareness to recognise when this is happening. Spiritual Discernment means having the ability to determine the difference between communicating with a discarnate person and a figment of your subconscious. This is of course common sense, but many seem to get caught up in admiring the imaginary fool’s gold instead of continuing to work towards the gold of spirit.
Each time you sit in a development circle you are allowing space for your own mental detritus to clear out, for your mind to settle in stillness or at least quieten a little and to practice perceiving or sensing contact from those on the Other Side of Life. One of the most common questions that developing mediums ask themselves (and their teachers) is;
HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M JUST MAKING IT ALL UP?
I often try to reassure individuals that it is through experience, practice and trust in their guides, that will eventually allow them to release any doubts and become much more trusting in what it is they recieve. After giving multipleessages that are positively recieved and validated by each recipient, you become ready to trust that it is mediumship after all.
It’s not easy. Mental Mediumship may often feel like it is in the realm of our own imagination precisely because we use similar parts of our brain to recieve impressions from the Next World. For example, when a spirit individual gives me a memory of a loved one as a child, it arrives in my mind as if I was having that thought spontaneously. The difference is that I know that the memory doesn’t belong to me.
Another point to consider is that when developing Mediumship (of ANY kind) we must have a communicator in spirit, evidence of them and their life, and a message pertinent to the sitter/recipient. In this way we are not confusing an imagined communicator with an actual, living person in the Next World. Developing mediums should be aware of this. If more often than not you are linking to individuals who cannot provide any valid evidence of themselves (names, relatives, addresses, age, loved one linked to them on the earth and their details) then you may wish to consider why that might be.
This can all be very confusing when starting out as mediums may struggle to sift and sort what belongs to their imagination and what may belong to a communicator. It is for this reason that it is so important to develop in a circle under the watchful eye of a well grounded, experienced and practical teacher.
(ALL THIS TALK OF HEARING VOICES SOUNDS INDICATIVE OF MENTAL ILLNESS.
It may well sound that way to the ignorant. However, I would state clearly that the voices of those from the Next World are never violent, angry or ask us to harm ourselves or others. Again, this is another reason why those with diagnosed or undiagnosed mental and/or emotional issues should NOT sit for any kind of psychic or mediumistic development as it may exacerbate any existing imbalances and create further distress.)
