Mediumship & the Quiet Mind

Why inner stillness is essential

A quiet mind is a prerequisite in mediumship.

Here’s why.

Picture your mind as the ocean; it’s usually busy thinking about yesterday or planning for tomorrow, it is choppy like  the Atlantic Ocean in midwinter, never settled, always moving, thoughts rising and falling constantly as waves, busy, busy, busy.

The voice of spirit is extremely subtle. It does not shout, it whispers and that applies whether we are using our soul sense of Clairaudience (psychic hearing/inner thought voice), Clairvoyance (psychic seeing/inner vision) or Clairsentience (psychic feeling/an inner sense of knowing).

When we begin our unfoldment it is a challenge to know which thoughts are our own, to sift out those that arise from our own subconscious and those of the World of the Spirit. With time and practice we each hope to be able to discern the difference, allowing us a deeper trust in the communications that we are recieving.

When the surface of the mind is so busy being caught up in worldly goings-on, how on earth can we register that Still Small Voice?

A Still Mind is not a Silent One.

Your initial reaction to the term ‘quietening the mind’ may be one of fear or dismay. Many of us have grown up without any idea of how to still our inner chatter. It can feel like an insurmountable ask, particularly if your usual state is anxiety.

The biggest mistake most of us make in the initial stages of our unfoldment is believing that a quiet mind is one without any thoughts at all. We get very frustrated when week after week we sit in stillness only to find that it is never totally still! Fun Fact: you cannot silence the mind completely. You can however learn to make peace with the thought stuff that comes and goes quite naturally, arising and dissolving, and quieten your inner state enough to register the very subtle vibrations of spirit.

Things that hamper stillness

If you are too outwardly focused into the physical world around you, you may find it difficult to touch the spheres of spirit.

If you like to watch 24 hour news, easily get sucked into political debates, read about all of the ugly, depressing world events, are more interested in which celebrity is wearing what designer to who’s wedding, than your own inner life or which family member is doing what with whom, you may find it difficult to settle your mind in order to develop your abilities.

That doesn’t mean that it is healthy to completely detach yourself from reality either, it’s not, but finding a healthy balance for you where you can be in the world but not of it, is essential.

Sometimes the more focused we are on a particular subject, the more it can show up in our meditations as the flotsam and jetsam of the subconscious. For instance, if you have been watching lots of true crime shows filled with serial killers and terror, the likelihood is that a representation of that will show up when you decide to sit in stillness.

That’s why what we consume as mediums is so important.

(And I’m not talking about diet here!)

I knew a medium who was developing at the same time I started out. Each week she would sit in circle and recieve gory details about people who had passed by someone else’s hand, their own or in accidents. Every week was the same, more blood and guts, more horror and trauma. It turned out that she was a fan of crime novels and enjoyed consuming hours of documentaries about murder victims and missing people.

Remember, that we all operate within Spiritual Universal Laws, one of them being ‘like attracts like’ (or ‘that which is like unto itself is drawn.’) As developing mediums and psychics it is important to consider that you will draw to you contacts from the Next World who match your current vibrational frequency.

There is a magnetic affinity that speaks louder in the universe than any words – you will draw to you what you are, not what or who you want.

TOP TIPS FOR A QUIETER MIND

☆ Make time to sit in stillness regularly.

☆ Consume a healthy (media!) diet.

☆ Sitting in stillness is not sitting for spirit contact (which should only be attempted in a well supervised circle).

☆ 5-10 minutes is plenty of time to begin.

☆ Observe thoughts arise and fall without judging them, following them or questioning them.

☆ If you become distracted return to focusing on your breath and begin afresh.

☆ You are acting as a compassionate witness to the thoughts, that is all.

☆ It will be difficult at first, but trust that with practice will become easier.

Once you are able to reconnect with that ocean of stillness that resides within your heart, you may notice that the positive effects ripple out into other areas of your life too, leading to a much calmer amd more centred you!

When the ocean of the mind becomes quieter, the subtle droplets of spirit interaction become much easier to register.

Try it for yourself.
