The Making of a Medium

One of the questions I get asked most of all is ‘How do I become a medium?’

As a teacher of mediumship development I have sometimes seen people come along to a circle or workshop believing that simply by attending, they will realise instantaneous communication with the Next World and leave as a fully-fledged medium.

Sadly, this is just not the case. Mediumship development can be a slow, sometimes laborious, often frustrating journey; the destination often gets further away the farther you travel. But, with the right attitude, education and training your developmental path has the potential to be the most fascinating, affirming, privilege of a lifetime.

As a human you are an individualised part of the Great Spirit (you may use any term with which you are comfortable here…God, Universal Consciousness, Life etc) a spirit being expressing itself through physical embodiment for a short time. You will never be more ‘spirit’ than you are in this very moment. As a spirit being you have many faculties which are difficult (some impossible) to demonstrate in this physical domain.

In physicality you use your physical senses to perceive the world around you. You alsohave Psychic or ‘Soul Senses’ as part of your birthright. You may or may not be aware of these, they may lie closer to the surface of the consciousness of one person and be more deeply hidden in another, everyone is different.

(Most people report experiences in their lives where they’ve had a ‘sixth sense’ regarding something about to happen, these are actually a very normal, natural part of our make up.)

Mediums; born or made?

The debate as to whether certain people are born as mediums or whether it is a skill that is learnt by those who are willing to persevere, is old but pertinent.

The phrase that is often used when discussing this is ‘Many are called, few are chosen.’

HINT: If you think you were chosen, it might be that you were called and vice versa!

There is a belief that those who have had some level of conscious psychic ability from childhood have earned that right through attaining the correct skills, attitude or karmic balance as a result of past lives. Others argue that mediums have been born with a particular path or mission assigned to them before their earthly birth.

That’s not to say that mediumship cannot be learned, of course it can. However, the difference may be similar to that of two people who take up the violin; one may pass their grades and play nicely, whilst the other excells, becomes a virtuoso and plays violin for sell out audiences around the world. One would say that the latter was somehow ‘born’ to do it.

Wherever you start, mediumship is a discipline. It takes patience, persistence, practice and trust for your abilities to develop correctly. The natural unfoldment of your soul senses should be absolutely individual, guided by an experienced teacher and your spirit guides.

As a student you may become frustrated that your development is not linear. Some weeks everything is ticking along nicely, you are able to give consistently good evidence and your contacts (links with the people in the Next World) are readily accepted. Then suddenly for no apparent reason, you feel like the plug has been pulled; you are no longer recieving any evidence, you feel like your guides have abandoned you and you feel as though you have gone right back to square one! This is where patience and persistence pays off.

Understanding that a teacher cannot make you a medium is important. Your spiritual development is your personal responsibility. Nobody can walk in your shoes, this path that you are on is all yours. Teachers can guide, make suggestions and advise, nothing more. If anyone guarantees you that they can make you psychic or give you mediumistic skills, WALK AWAY!

Mediumship is a classic case of ‘you get out of it what you put in.’* If you can consistently offer the people of the Spirit World the right conditions to assist in your development, if you can dedicate some time to studying your subject and learning to quieten your mind, then you have a very good chance of going as far as you can go. (*The caveat here is that sitting in multiple circles every week does not equal better or quicker development – your unfoldment is a matter for your spirit, your guides and God, doing more is not going to circumvent that.

Your intention is also key. If you intend to develop to the very best of your ability, then you stand a better chance of doing so. If you aren’t trying your best, or make a half-hearted effort, don’t expect the best results.

Whether mediums are born or made, all should undergo the appropriate education and training in their subject.    I have heard of many so-called ‘natural’ mediums who have had absolutely NO training or ethics and have told sitters the most outrageous and untrue things. Don’t let ‘natural’ become synonymous with ‘bad’.

If you have come to psychism and mediumship later in life, fantastic! You will hopefully have a greater breadth and depth of life experience and knowledge to get the most out of your development.

MY TOP TIPS FOR DEVELOPMENT:

☆ Find a teacher with experience & common sense.

☆ Set the intention to be the best that you can be.

☆ Attend a well run, well supervised development circle once a week.

☆ Learn to turn your focus inward, relax and quieten your mind.

☆ Take less notice of news, politics, celebrity gossip and family drama.

☆ Read about great mediums of the past.

☆ Have patience; you’ll get there!

☆ Have persistence; keep going!

☆ Have trust; your spirit team will guide you.

☆ Take responsibility for your own soul growth; whilst unfoldment cannot be forced or sped up, your attitude, actions and dedication will get you where you need to be.

Good luck!
